Harare had the pleasure of welcoming another hot contender on the Food circuit in February 2018; the Roco Mamas franchise opened shop at Sam Levy’s Village. This brand is very popular in neighbouring South Africa and joins the growing list of foreign flavours that have come through to serve Zimbos. The Village is truly becoming a world of various flavours and we are not complaining. I managed to pop in and check it out recently, just a laid back Saturday morning visit. 

Now experience has taught me that new eateries usually face some hiccups when they start operating and this delay in visiting was rather deliberate. After hearing some mixed reactions and reviews to Roco Mamas, I was optimistic that they would have settled in. The restaurant was not busy when I arrived; the mall was still welcoming the thin morning crowd. They are located on the Village walk extension which is easily accessible, highly visible but has limited parking space. 

Roco Mamas is a smash burger joint that offers indoor and outdoor eating area. The Indoor space is well lit, airy and the decor is clean with a cheerful orange to brighten things up. The waiter was very polite and was kind enough to give me a rundown of their menu. Carefully explaining how they have a number of burgers on menu, but they have the unique M.Y.O option; (make your own). This is where you choose what you want to throw onto the burger roll and patties. They have over twenty interesting add-ons which include veggies, condiments and meats. Some of these are caramelised onions, chilli Mayo, bacon and a number of cheeses.

Looking at the menu, I really thought to myself these people know how to make an adventure out of food.  Their menu is colourful and quirky. One gets to tick their preference, put their name/alias as well. Every offering has a funky name. The smash burger is essentially a burger made with a patty that has been smashed on the grill. There are beef, chicken and Veggie options on the menu. Other offerings are; chicken wings, Nachos, ribs (pork & beef), salads and fries. I love hamburgers and it’s a comfort to know you are in a place where they will serve genuine beef patties.  

I really felt at home as I picked the classic Cheese (Smash, Aged Cheddar, Sweet Pickle, Tomato, Red Onion & RocoMayo) to which  I added some extras. I also had the cheesy (turbo charged) fries. Their drinks and sweets turned out to be equally interesting. I sampled the Strawberry G-shake. They also have coffee, tea, sodas, Juice (store varieties), wines and beers. It would seem the freak shakes and waffles are the 2 sweet offerings. The freak shake is a large, dessert inspired, nothing-you’ve-seen-before milkshake. It comes in Peanutology and Death by chocolate flavours. 

My food turned out to be eye catching, the burger was large, unconventional and kind of busy but in an interesting way. The burger was excellent, the beef (patty) was succulent and substantial, the sweet pickle was very tasty and the cheesy fries were generously covered in cheese sauce. The portions seemed to be fair in comparison to the price. I particularly loved the g-shake and could easily have taken a second! I happily tucked in while some electronic rock played in the background. The kind of environment you can easily get used to. 

Roco Mamas is open 7 days a week from 8AM to 10 pm, they do not have a Kiddies menu per se but portions can be reduced to suit the younger diners. They also have a delivery service for those who would like to enjoy from home. It is a place for genuine food lovers who want real value and is perfect if you are ever on the lookout for a unique hamburger experience. Diners should expect to spend at least $15.
